“Praise the Lord. Praise the Lord from the heavens; praise him in the heights above. Praise him, all his angels; praise him, all his heavenly hosts. Praise him, sun and moon; praise him, all you shining stars. Praise him, you highest heavens and you waters above the skies. Let them praise the name of the Lord, for at his command they were created, and he established them for ever and ever— he issued a decree that will never pass away.”
Psalm 148:1-6 NIV
This weekend a unique astrological phenomenon happens. The moon is full and it’s Friday the 13th. Spooky, huh? The first time in 20 years the two have fallen on the same day. I’ve seen lots of friends posting things about it on social media suggesting things will be crazy today in schools and hospitals across the globe.
I’m not going to deny the potential for craziness. I have no doubt in such cases the spiritual atmosphere increases causing mayhem to ensue. And when two collide together in some cosmic melody, its grounds for things to get even crazier than usual.
As I scrolled through social media last night, there was this temptation to join the “I’m scared of tomorrow” crowd. To jump on the wagon saying, “It’s going to be a crazy day! The moon is full and Friday is the 13th. A double whammy of craziness.”
I stopped myself. There was this all too familiar check in my spirit that something just wasn’t quite right about that idea and that something just wasn’t okay with being afraid of the affects of a full moon. After letting the Holy Spirit work with me for a while, this is what I settled upon and it’s something I want to remind Believers of today.
God commands the moon. And He is Lord over our days. All of them. Especially the ones that have a full moon and Fridays that fall on the 13th.
Psalm 148:5 “…at His command, they (the sun, moon & stars) were created.”
God commands the moon. He commanded it be created and now he commands its phases. He is Lord over the full moon we will have tonight!
Stop and think about this with me for a moment. One day God decided, “Moon, you are going to exist.” He spoke and boom. The moon was created. God commands the moon. He then created this beautiful dance between the tides and moon as they step in sync together in an eternal promenade. The phases of the moon are in His hands.
Do you think a God who holds the power to create and sustain such majesty in the sky would ever for a moment not be in complete authority over its phases?
Furthermore, if God is Lord over the phases of the moon and He has placed His Holy Spirit inside you, are we not then capable of standing in that authority and having the same commanding voice over the moon and its phases? I am not suggesting that we can look up to the sky, hold up our Gandalf staff and speak to it causing the phases to change. No. We are not God. But I am suggesting that we do not have to allow our emotions to be swayed by fear over the phases of the moon.
Will things be crazy in schools and hospitals across the world today? Probably. But let me encourage you Believer, you need not be afraid of that craziness. I am rejoicing today that God is GOD over the moon and it’s phases! Be it full or half. Quarter, waxing, wanning, gibbous or crescent. God commands them all. On the 13th or the 31st, He is Lord over the day.
Rest on this. Crazy things may happen today. Craziness all around us. But the moon bows to God. And all the increased craziness caused by a full moon must bow to Him too. We need not be afraid of the moon phase or Friday the 13th. Its just another day on the calendar that He is Lord over. God commands them both.
He has granted us this gift called the Holy Spirit. The presence of God resides in us. We must host it well. As you walk around watching craziness unfold around you today, stand in authority over the crazy! Remind your emotions that God commands the moon! And we can rest easy knowing that God is God even when the full moon falls on a Friday that is also the 13th of the month.
Tonight rather than be afraid of craziness, my family and I are going to enjoy the firepit in our back yard. We will roast some marshmellows and make some smores. My husband will pull his telescope out and we will enjoy the majesty of God’s creation up close and personal. As I look through that telescope and see all the caverns and craters on the moon’s surface, I will stand in awe of a God who commands the moon. Join me tonight in looking up at the moon with a heart full of praise for a good good Father who commands the moon.
